Excerpts from my Diary

Thursday, July 21, 2005

My Day:

  • Lots of being rounded up, put in a bus, counted, waiting in traffic and dining in "made for tourist" restaurants like Kalinka. Oh, the horror!
  • We went to the Tretyakov Picture Gallery and saw paintings by Isaac Levitan .
  • Impressions from bus:
    • much new construction
    • heavy, heavy traffic*
    • man sitting under a tree in park reading in the rain-the real Russia?

*Look at image of Moscow traffic today, This too , Read BBC story on traffic.

My Evening:

I broke away from the group and spend the evening walking around the Arbat the the river. Remember...the sun sets at about 10:30 P.M.

The Arbat

  • Lots of public drinking- not sitting and drinking, but drinking while walking down the street.
  • Very happy people watching.... older women have that strange red-colored dyed hair-young girls quite fashionable.

Moscow River

  • Had fun photographing the lovely fountain at the station.
  • Favorite memory of the bridge-man reading newspaper on bridge at 10:00 p.m. Remember the sun sets around 10:30 p.m.

Back to hotel

  • Dinner at the Panorama Restaurant on the 22nd floor of my hotel. Fabulous food and great view of Moscow at night (not that I could even see Moscow in the dark; I would have to wake up at 3:00 a.m. and look out the window).
  • Hotel first class, safe, quiet, secure.
